Toyota has redefined crossover performance with the debut of the RAV-X, a groundbreaking concept inspired by off-road racing, unveiled at the 2024 SEMA Show. This bold vision for a small crossover is the creation of Toyota’s Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD) team, who managed every aspect of the build, from concept sketches and CAD designs to 3D-printed components and final assembly.
Designed to reflect the endurance and toughness of the famed Dakar Rally, the RAV-X showcases Toyota’s commitment to performance innovation. “The RAV-X concept is meant to be a halo for the RAV4 lineup,” stated Jakin Wilson, senior engineering manager at Toyota Service Parts and Accessories. “We wanted to create something that brings true off-road excitement to the RAV4.”
Built on the 2024 RAV4 PHEV’s foundation, which delivers 302 net combined horsepower, the RAV-X capitalizes on its low center of gravity and pairs it with a ram air intake. To meet the rigorous demands of off-road performance, SPAD engineers outfitted the RAV-X with custom long-travel suspension, raising the vehicle by 2 inches and widening its track by 6.3 inches. With fully adjustable, 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks and custom front and rear reservoirs, the RAV-X is engineered to handle harsh desert terrain, offering unmatched control and handling.
Protection and durability were paramount in its design. High-clearance skid plates armor the undercarriage, and raised rocker panels provide increased clearance. The Dakar-inspired front bumper with cooling ducts and custom fender flares add functionality and flair. 17x8.5-inch forged aluminum wheels with 265/65R17 tires ensure the RAV-X is well-equipped for optimal approach and departure angles, enhancing its off-road prowess.
Aesthetically, the RAV-X merges functionality with aggressive styling. An aerodynamic rear spoiler and strategically placed vents in the front fascia optimize airflow. A dual exhaust system integrated into the rear bumper further amplifies its rugged look.
“This RAV-X isn’t just a concept; it’s a bold exploration of what’s possible when innovation meets performance,” said Mike Tripp, Toyota Division Marketing’s group vice president. “With RAV-X, we’re reimagining how adventurous and dynamic a small crossover can be.”
The RAV-X represents Toyota’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering. On display from November 5-8 at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, this concept invites enthusiasts to explore the exciting future of small crossovers.
