Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept – SEMA 2024
Toyota thrilled desert racing fans worldwide by unveiling the #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept at the 2024 SEMA Show.
“Our goal was to highlight the performance, capability, and versatility of the new Tacoma,” said Paul Doleshal, group manager of motorsports for Toyota Motor North America. “The #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept envisions what a dedicated race truck could be within the Tacoma lineup, blending Baja-inspired engineering and high-speed racing elements of the TRD Pro with the iconic XtraCab configuration.”
This project marks Toyota’s new partnership with Legacy Motor Club and legendary driver Jimmie Johnson. While Johnson’s NASCAR achievements are well-known, his roots trace back to off-road racing on dirt bikes, including competitions like the grueling Baja 1000. The concept also connects with Johnson’s nostalgia for Toyota trucks.
“When I was 16, I took my driver’s test in my uncle’s Toyota pickup, so Toyota trucks and I go way back,” Johnson noted. “This #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept captures the serious off-road performance and capability of both TRD and Toyota Trucks.”
The #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept is modified for the Stock Mid-Size off-road race class. The transformation started with integrating 2025 Tacoma TRD Pro performance components onto the classic two-door Tacoma XtraCab frame. Toyota’s Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD) team engineered the shift from four doors to two, focusing initially on suspension. It’s equipped with TRD Pro’s FOX Quick Switch 3 (QS3) Internal Bypass shocks, featuring 2.5-inch aluminum housings and rear remote reservoirs, plus front TRD Upper Control Arms for enhanced off-road handling. Underneath, it’s protected with full skid plating to guard key components like the front end, transmission, and rear transaxle. The custom roll cage enhances safety and rigidity, while inside, multipoint race harnesses keep the driver and navigator securely in IsoDynamic Performance seats. The aluminum-reinforced 6-foot bed includes a fuel cell and bed-mounted spare tire carrier, with the tailgate replaced by a net for additional weight savings.
The truck’s livery, created by Kyle Williams, combines diverse elements into one cohesive design. The 2025 TRD Pro exclusive “Mudbath” color base is complemented by matte black graphics featuring Jimmie Johnson’s iconic paint schemes, along with the classic TRD yellow, orange, and red stripes reminiscent of Baja legend Ivan “Ironman” Stewart. Retro-inspired details like chrome-finished side mirrors and door handles, an ARB Sport Bar with custom lighting, and brushed aluminum TRD Pro wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich tires complete the look.
“The TRD ProRunner Race Concept celebrates Toyota’s partnership with Legacy Motor Club and Jimmie’s legacy, blending his history with Toyota’s rich off-road racing heritage,” said Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Division Marketing at Toyota Motor North America. “This build showcases the excitement, versatility, and capability of the Tacoma platform.”
Visitors to the 2024 SEMA Show can experience the unveiling of the #84 Tacoma TRD ProRunner Race Concept and explore its innovative features. This concept truck exemplifies Toyota’s commitment to pushing boundaries while honoring the legacy of racing legends.
